According to 2013 stats, 49.1 million American people, or 14% of our households, were food insecure. This breaks down to 33.3 million adults and 15.8 million children. (1)
But what is happening in our own backyard? Are people in Wisconsin and Iowa food insecure?
According to Feeding America, one in nine people in Wisconsin and one in eight people in Iowa struggles with hunger. Of this statistic, one in six are children in both states. Over 10% of OUR local community. Our friends, families and neighbors.
At startling rates, Midwesterners have to make the difficult decision on whether to make utility, medical and housing payments or put food on the table for their families.
With the recent push to “eat local” and “buy local,” let’s make the community push to “feed local, help local and improve local.”
